The Brooklyn Nets are in for a busy offseason as they continue their rebuild, and re-signing Cam Thomas to a new contract is one of the team’s top priorities. After earning roughly $4 million in 2024-25, Thomas will hit restricted free agency.
Because the Brooklyn Nets are projected to have significant cap space this summer, they’re in a great position to retain Thomas. ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks expects the LSU product to earn something similar to Portland Trail Blazers’ Anfernee Simons, who signed a four-year, $100 million extension in 2022.
“What is his number in free agency? Is it 20-ish (million per year), or somewhere around there? Consider it comparable to the Anfernee Simons contract that he signed about three years ago,” Marks said on NBA on ESPN. “Remember, Brooklyn has the right to match any offer sheet. You have leverage in the process until a team comes in with money, and who is that team going to be?”
“There’s nobody out there right now who has more than $15 million. I do think he is a priority to come back, but I do think he’s part of a pecking order of how you’re going to structure your salary moving forward here,” he added.
Sharif Phillips-Keaton of the Nets Wire recently floated the idea of the Brooklyn Nets acquiring Josh Giddey. Giddey, like Cam Thomas, will hit restricted free agency this offseason.
“While paying Giddey $30 million per season would be a big investment for Brooklyn so early in the rebuild, it’s important to note that figure may be the going rate for someone of his caliber,” Phillips-Keaton wrote in his column.
“NBA insider Jake Fischer reported last week that Giddey is expected to remain with the Bulls due to the season that he had for Chicago, along with the fact that the team might be trying to retool around Giddey after trading away DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine over the course of the campaign. Time will tell what the Bulls do in free agency, but if they’re willing to let Giddey walk, Brooklyn could have their point guard of the future,” he concluded.
