FOX Sports recently floated the idea of the Milwaukee Bucks bringing Russell Westbrook on board. Westbrook is currently a free agent after his stint with the Denver Nuggets last season, and while his fit in Milwaukee might seem unconventional, the move could make sense.
“With Lillard gone, Milwaukee has an enormous scoring vacancy to fill, which Turner’s perimeter shooting will partially but not completely fill. Westbrook would be instant offense off head coach Doc Rivers’ bench. He provides a vibrant ball-handler who attacks the rack with bad intentions, can handle the rock in the halfcourt and serve as a viable starting point guard, if needed,” the Fox Sports article explained.
Bringing in Westbrook could actually benefit the Bucks. By waiving and stretching Damian Lillard, Milwaukee didn’t just shed his contract—they lost the perimeter engine that drove their offense. Westbrook might not be a flawless replacement, but he could fill the gap effectively.
Westbrook remains an elite ball-handler, and last season showed he can thrive in a reduced role. He excelled as the Nuggets’ sixth man, complementing stars like Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon.
The Bucks could run into some three-point spacing problems, but a lineup with Westbrook, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Myles Turner, and two dependable shooters like AJ Green, Gary Trent Jr., or Taurean Prince could operate efficiently and create plenty of offensive opportunities.
With Kyle Kuzma on board for a full season, the starting five around Giannis Antetokounmpo should click more smoothly, but this year calls for a “more talent, more impact” approach. Westbrook injects instant scoring, capable of putting up 20 points on any night, giving the Bucks another potent weapon as they push to remain serious title contenders.
The former MVP could spearhead the offense, creating opportunities for Antetokounmpo to score inside while exploiting off-ball cuts when he isn’t handling the ball. Even when he attacks the rim himself, Antetokounmpo could use his size and strength to generate space and finish, just as he did alongside Lillard, Jrue Holiday, and other playmakers.
Three-point shooting is crucial in today’s NBA, but versatile skills still carry huge value. That’s exactly where Westbrook could make an impact with the Bucks.
