NBA reporter Keith Smith of Spotrac spoke to a Milwaukee Bucks front office executive about Giannis Antetokounmpo.
After the Bucks lost to the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 2025 playoffs in five games, NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Antetokounmpo was “open-minded” about leaving Milwaukee for the first time in his career.
However, the Bucks don’t expect Antetokounmpo to request a trade.
“We have no indication that anything is really changing as far as our relationship with the player we think is the best in the world,” the Bucks front office executive said. “We rebuilt on the fly, in a really challenging situation, but we think we did it as well as it could be done.”
Milwaukee waived and stretched Damian Lillard to sign Myles Turner. The organization also re-signed Bobby Portis, Kevin Porter Jr., Gary Trent Jr., Taurean Prince and Jericho Sims and signed Gary Harris.
The Bucks did lose Brook Lopez to the Los Angeles Clippers. Pat Connaughton was also traded to the Charlotte Hornets.
“When we signed Brook forever ago, it was because we knew adding a floor spacer that could protect the rim next to Giannis would make us hard to deal with on both ends,” a Bucks coach said. “We’re doing the same with Myles. He’s not exactly the same as Brook, but we don’t have to completely change our identity with Myles either. That’s huge for continuity.”
The Bucks reached the mountain top in 2021, winning the championship against the Phoenix Suns. However, the franchise has won just one postseason series since then.
Antetokounmpo has spent his entire career with the Bucks. He was the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
One of the greatest players in NBA history, Antetokounmpo will make $54.1 million next season. The Bucks signed the forward to a three-year, $175 million extension in October 2023.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, a one-time Finals MVP, a one-time Defensive Player of the Year and a nine-time All-Star. He has career averages of 23.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks with the Bucks.
