Buddy Hield did not need many words to sum up the emotions behind a season that has unraveled quickly for the Golden State Warriors.
Just hours after Jimmy Butler underwent successful surgery to repair a torn right ACL, Hield left a raw, joking-but-honest reply under Butler’s Instagram post that had the Bay Area fans looking for answers.
Butler had shared a screenshot of a FaceTime call with Hield, captioned simply, “Hey bighead.”
Hield’s response cut a little deeper. “Why did you trade me?” he wrote, followed by a crying emoji.
However, Golden State’s year has been defined by setbacks. Butler’s season-ending injury removed a key two-way presence, and the situation worsened Monday when the team announced Stephen Curry will miss several weeks with a lingering knee issue, forcing him out of the upcoming All-Star Game.
Even after a gritty win over the Memphis Grizzlies without either star, the Warriors remain eighth in the West at 29–25, a position that feels fragile given their health.
Hield’s comment struck a nerve because his exit came as part of that unraveling. The sharpshooter was dealt at the trade deadline, alongside Jonathan Kuminga, in a move that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Golden State.
On paper, the deal addressed a positional need. Emotionally, it closed the door on a locker-room personality who had quickly become part of the team’s fabric.
During his season and a half with the Warriors, Hield was a constant presence. He played all 82 games last year, averaged 11.1 points, and delivered one of the defining moments of their playoff run with a 33-point, nine-three-pointer explosion in a Game 7 win over the Houston Rockets.
Now with the Atlanta Hawks, Hield is searching for footing again. Atlanta sits ninth in the East at 26–29 and is sorting through its own roster questions after multiple deadline moves.
Hield logged fewer than five minutes in his Hawks debut during a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, a quiet start that underscored how uncertain his role remains.
That said, for Hield, the path forward is simple but demanding. He needs to rediscover the shooting consistency that once made him untouchable in big moments. For Butler, recovery is now the priority.
The Warriors’ deadline decision was pragmatic. Bringing in Porzingis addressed a positional need, even if it meant parting with a respected locker-room presence. Hield’s contract and declining efficiency made him expendable in a season defined by urgency around Curry’s prime.
