The Chicago Bulls finally made the decision to begin a true rebuild last season, letting guard DeMar DeRozan walk in free agency and leaning into their youth.
It turned out to be a massive success as they managed to make the NBA Play-In Tournament on the back of young guards Josh Giddey and Coby White, as well as rookie forward Matas Buzelis.
The Bulls clearly believe they have some pieces to build around because Giddey received a four-year, $100 million extension from the team.
He and White developed into a formidable duo in the Eastern Conference, but the former Oklahoma City Thunder draft pick will be without his running mate to start the season.
The Bulls announced on Monday afternoon that White will miss Chicago’s season opener against the Detroit Pistons with a calf strain.
Medical Update: Coby White has resumed on-court basketball activities and continues to make progress in his ramp up phase for a right calf strain.

Soft tissue injuries are notoriously tricky and volatile, so the Bulls will be careful with him and evaluate him again in two weeks.
White’s injury is a tough blow for a Bulls team who seemed poised to take another step this season in a weakened Eastern Conference.
The Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics will be without point guard Tyrese Haliburton and forward Jayson Tatum as they both recover from Achilles tears that they suffered during the NBA Playoffs.
Injuries are never a good thing, but at the very least it provides more touches for Buzelis, who Bulls fans have high hopes for after an impressive preseason.
MIP THIS YEAR

Chicago should be able to manage for a while without White, but they cannot afford to be without him for an extended period of time, especially with such a young roster.
