BYU Hires Suns Assistant Kevin Young as Next HC

BYU has hired Phoenix Suns associate head coach Kevin Young to become the next men’s basketball head coach. Young replaces Mark Pope, who took the Kentucky job last week, going back to his alma mater.

Young has spent the last 17 years in the NBA and NBA G-League with various teams. The Salt Lake City, Ut. native has spent time with the Suns and Philadelphia 76ers on the coaching staff. Young played college basketball at Middle Georgia (2000-02) and Clayton State (2002-04) before getting into coaching.

BYU announced that Young will finish his season with the Phoenix Suns before taking over duties. The Suns are preparing for the NBA playoffs currently, earning a 6-seed in the Western Conference and will play the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round.

Young replaces Pope, who spent five seasons at BYU, and had a 68% winning percentage. BYU made the NCAA Tournament its first year in the Big 12. The Cougars finished fifth in the conference.
