The Sixers have reached a two-way agreement with Caleb Love, sources tell ESPN’s Shams Charania ( Twitter link).
The 24-year-old shooting guard signed a two-way contract with Portland last summer after five collegiate seasons, three at North Carolina and two at Arizona. He appeared in 49 games as a rookie (one start), averaging 10.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 20.7 minutes per night. However, shooting was a concern as he connected at just 38.8% from the field and 31.8% from three-point range.
Love got a chance to play meaningful basketball with the Trail Blazers in the midst of a playoff race and proved to be an aggressive defender and creative play-maker. He wasn’t eligible for the postseason as Portland advanced through the play-in tournament and lost to the Spurs in the first round, but he played a role in helping the team get there.
Love found himself in the midst of a controversy as one of three players left behind when new owner Tom Dundon opted not to bring his two-way players to San Antonio for the first two playoff games. Players not on the 15-man roster can’t compete in the playoffs, and Dundon said he wasn’t aware that they typically travel with their teams.
Love should get the opportunity to advance his career in Philadelphia, where he’ll be part of an exciting backcourt that already features starters Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, free agent addition Anfernee Simons and first-round pick Labaron Philon.
Earlier today, the Sixers reached a two-way agreement with Rayan Rupert, so two of their three two-way slots will be filled once those deals are finalized, with both of the newcomers having played for Portland last season.
