When the Memphis Grizzlies started strong in the 2026-2027 NBA season’s opening week, it was all attributed to the brilliance of Ty Jerome. But then, the team continued to win despite Jerome’s numbers declining.
Right now, they are the hottest team in the entire league. And nobody had predicted their flawless start. While some may say that this team will fall back to earth soon, the safe bet is that they can sustain this for an entire season.
Cameron Boozer, the third overall pick in this year’s draft, has been a huge part of the Grizzlies’ resurgence. While his shooting numbers certainly need more improvement, his overall impact on the floor is encouraging.
But can this team truly contend in the brutal Western Conference? There’s a chance they might.
While Cameron Boozer might be seen as the team’s future star, this team is built with guys raring to prove their worth in the league.
This team has 12 players who currently average at least 5 points per game this season. Yes, twelve guys. And anybody can score more than that number in any given night. That shows this team has the depth to compete against the league’s giants.
Jerome might be their leading scorer, but he’s not the most important player for this team. It’s none other than Cameron Boozer – a 19-year-old who’s making a mark in his rookie campaign.
It may be easy to brush this team off completely from the list of contenders. However, the lack of ego and the willingness to share the ball make the Memphis Grizzlies a plausible contender this season.
Aside from offense, the team is full of young guys who are willing defenders. Their ‘easier’ schedule may have played a role in their hot start, but winning a lot changes the dynamics of a team, especially for a young team like the Grizzlies. It may be hard to judge their true potential, but it’s not hard to envision them making the playoffs if everybody remains healthy and engaged.
