The tear that Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic is on to start the season has questions being posed that were previously unfathomable.
After dropping 53 points in Friday night’s comeback win over the Portland Trail Blazers, Doncic was asked if averaging 40 points for an entire season is possible.
“Man, it’s obviously a long season, we’re just ten games in, we’ve got 72 left. But, as long as we win, I’m good,” Doncic said. “Obviously, I got them up today, I ain’t gonna lie. Hopefully it continues, but you never know.”
It has only been 10 total games for the Lakers and nine played for Doncic, but so far he is on pace, averaging 40.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.7 assists while shooting 49.8% from the field, 41.9% from 3-point range and 87.3% from the free throw line.
If he can come close to that type of efficiency the rest of the way, then averaging 40 is not inconceivable. Unfortunately though, there is not much room for slip-ups as Wilt Chamberlain is the only player in NBA history to average at least 40.
Regardless though, Doncic is enjoying playing winning basketball with his team.
“I’m having a lot of fun,” he said. “Obviously playing basketball, it’s a lot of fun for me. It’s more when you play like this and when you win games. So, it’s been like this my whole life, basketball was my dream. Playing in the NBA was my dream, so just living my dream.”
As Doncic mentioned, he got up a bunch of shots in the win over the Trail Blazers, making 17 of 33 attempts. Perhaps his most important came at the end of the first half when he banked in a shot from three-quarters court. That cut the Lakers’ deficit from 10 to seven and gave them momentum going into the halftime locker room, allowing them to fully take control in the second half.
After the win, Doncic had jokes when talking about his intention behind that shot and the momentum it gave the Lakers.
“Oh, yeah, definitely. I think it changes the whole energy, in the team and in the gym. So, I thought it was [an] important shot to make. So that’s why I decided to make it.”
If it was anyone else then a comment like that wouldn’t be believable. And even though Doncic meant it in jest, nothing is out of the realm of possibility with the way the Slovenian star in playing right now.
