The Cavaliers have spent the past few years developing young contributors behind their veteran core.
Now, president of basketball operations Koby Altman believes Tyrese Proctor could be next in line.
Speaking at his end-of-season press conference, Altman pointed to the rookie guard as one player he’s particularly excited to watch this summer.
“Tyrese Proctor’s going to have a big offseason for us hopefully,” Altman told reporters. “I’m excited about his growth for sure.”
Proctor’s role fluctuated throughout his first NBA season, but injuries early in the year provided opportunities for the former Duke standout to gain valuable experience.
According to Altman, Proctor logged more than 500 minutes as a rookie and even appeared in the season opener at Madison Square Garden when Cleveland needed additional backcourt depth.
While his opportunities were limited, Proctor showed flashes.
In one of his most impressive performances, he finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Altman also praised the young guard’s development as a playmaker, shooter and defender.
Proctor acknowledged late in the season that one of the biggest challenges of his rookie year was staying prepared despite never knowing exactly when his number would be called.
“It’s been challenging, but it’s been a lot of fun,” Proctor said in April, via Spencer Davies of Roundtable. “Not knowing when you’re going to play, how many minutes you’re going to play, so just being ready at all times is really important.”
Altman also credited coach Kenny Atkinson and Cleveland’s player-development program for helping young players find success.
The Cavs have recently watched players such as Jaylon Tyson, Craig Porter Jr., Dean Wade and Sam Merrill carve out roles within the organization.
If Altman’s prediction proves accurate, Proctor may be the next young player to make a significant leap.
And with Cleveland once again focused on contending for a championship next year, finding internal improvement could be just as important as any offseason move.
