By now, you’ve heard the chatter. It links Cavaliers All-Star point guard Darius Garland to the Orlando Magic.
In return, it links Magic guard Jalen Suggs and wing Tristan Da Silva to the Cavs. But as I’ve written before, most of the talk surrounding Cleveland and Garland right now is just that — talk.
Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reiterated as much in his latest column.
“For all the noise these days around Darius Garland in Cleveland, we’ve been reliably told that the Cavaliers and Magic have not held substantive conversations on a Garland deal … and that Cleveland has little interest in helping Orlando improve its standing in the Eastern Conference,” Fischer wrote.
Several sources told Hoops Wire that the Cavs trading Garland is actually a long shot. Cleveland isn’t actively looking to move him. The difference this year, reports suggest, is that the Cavs are merely open to the idea.
But the Orlando rumors took on a life of their own. That’s the way things generally work at this time of year. Sometimes, there’s truth to those rumors. That doesn’t appear to be the case here, though.
Garland had a strong individual season, earning his second All-Star nod while averaging 20.6 points and 6.7 assists per game on efficient shooting splits (.472/.401/.878). He also appeared in a career-high 75 regular-season games. But a toe injury suffered during Cleveland’s first-round sweep of Miami limited his effectiveness in the second round against Indiana, where the Cavs were eliminated.
