The Boston Celtics have opened up the 2025–26 season with two consecutive losses. Boston dropped its season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers by a final score of 117–116 and lost Friday’s game against the New York Knicks 105–95.
Despite the team’s struggles, Jaylen Brown has made an impressive transition taking over as the primary scoring option for the Celtics in Jayson Tatum’s absence. The 29-year-old wing is averaging 24.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists this year, while shooting 50.0% overall and 45.5% from three-point range. Brown has also logged 36 minutes per game so far, a trend that is likely to continue as his workload will increase as the focal point of the offense.
Heading into the season, Jaylen Brown’s status remained uncertain, making his strong start even more impressive. He suffered a left hamstring injury during a preseason game against the Toronto Raptors and was listed as questionable ahead of the regular season opener against the 76ers. Fortunately, he played in that matchup and was subsequently removed from the injury report before Friday’s game against New York.
However, ahead of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Pistons, the Celtics reinserted Brown’s name on the injury report with a designation of left hamstring strain reconditioning.
“Injury Report for tomorrow at DET: Jaylen Brown (left hamstring strain reconditioning) – QUESTIONABLE, Luka Garza (concussion protocol) – QUESTIONABLE, Jayson Tatum (right Achilles repair) – OUT, Derrick White (right wrist sprain) – PROBABLE,” the team wrote on X, also listing other injured players.
Injury Report for tomorrow at DET:
— Boston Celtics (@celtics) October 25, 2025
Jaylen Brown (left hamstring strain reconditioning) - QUESTIONABLE
Luka Garza (concussion protocol) - QUESTIONABLE
Jayson Tatum (right achilles repair) - OUT
Derrick White (right wrist sprain) - PROBABLE
While it is concerning to see Brown’s name again, Boston is playing a back-to-back, meaning the team has a quick turnaround with a game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday. With a long season ahead, the Celtics are likely managing Brown’s workload, especially given how much he has already played.
As Brown enters his tenth season in the league, all with Boston, he is expected to take another leap forward. He has already earned four All-Star selections and one All-NBA honor, yet with so many more opportunities this year, he has the ability to reach an even higher level. His efforts will be crucial if the Celtics hope to remain in playoff contention, especially with Tatum seemingly ahead in his recovery from an Achilles tear. If Brown can hold things down until a possible Tatum return, the duo has already shown they can make a run to the NBA Finals, as they did in 2024 when they won the championship.
