It’s been another dominant regular season for the defending NBA champions.
The Boston Celtics notched their 60th win of the year on Friday night with a commanding victory over the Charlotte Hornets, continuing their pursuit of a record 19th NBA title. It marks the third consecutive season Boston has hit the 60-win mark.
With one game remaining, the Celtics are locked into the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and will await the winner of the Orlando Magic vs. Atlanta Hawks play-in matchup to determine their first-round playoff opponent.
Boston has looked like a title contender from opening night, boasting one of the deepest and most balanced rosters in the league.
The team’s starting five — Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White — has been among the NBA’s most efficient units despite playing under 30 games together, while role players like Al Horford, Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, and Luke Kornet have provided key support off the bench.
On Saturday, the Celtics moved to bolster their depth even further. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the team has finalized a standard two-year deal for JD Davison, converting the guard’s two-way contract as they fill out the final roster spot ahead of the postseason.
The Boston Celtics are converting guard JD Davison, the G League MVP, to a standard, two-year NBA contract, agent Corey Marcum tells ESPN. Davison, who has played 34 career NBA games, averaged 25.1 points, 7.6 assists and 5.6 rebounds for G League Maine this season. pic.twitter.com/7qcmGWVoEG

Davison, 22, has emerged as one of the G League’s most dynamic players this season, averaging 25.1 points, 7.6 assists, and 5.6 rebounds over 30 games for the Maine Celtics. His efforts earned him the 2024-25 G League MVP award and further cemented his development since being selected by Boston in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft.
Though he’s played limited NBA minutes — just 35 games over three seasons, including 15 appearances this year — Davison has shown flashes of his athleticism and playmaking when called upon. He saw two minutes of action in Friday’s win over the Hornets, finishing with two points and an assist.
With their playoff seed secured, head coach Joe Mazzulla may look to rest his starters in Sunday’s regular-season finale — a rematch against Charlotte — providing Davison and other bench players an opportunity to log meaningful minutes ahead of the playoffs.
As Boston prepares for another deep postseason run, Davison’s promotion adds a final touch to a roster that already looks poised to defend its crown.
