Celtics rumors: Marc Stein reveals free agency ‘lock’

The Boston Celtics went through a lot of turnover last offseason in an attempt to cut down on cap numbers, but they were still able to stay competitive. They even made moves at the trade deadline, with one of them being acquiring Nikola Vucevic from the Chicago Bulls.

Vucevic was the perfect center for the Celtics, as he could space the floor and also had a nice touch in the paint. Another reason why they traded for him was that he had one year left on his deal, and falls off their cap sheet in the offseason. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he’ll be back with the Celtics next season, but he’s supposed to garner a lot of attention in free agency, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

“Former All-Star center Nikola Vučević is increasingly regarded as a certainty to switch teams this summer after a fractured right ring finger in March helped derail his brief stint as a Boston Celtic in the spring,” Stein wrote. “He’ll be 36 in October but figures to draw some interest on the open market given that there is generally always a clamor for floor-spacing big men.”

Any team looking for a backup stretch big will probably be calling for Vucevic during the summer, and he’s shown throughout the past few years that he still has a lot left in the tank.

For the Celtics, it’s uncertain what their offseason plans will be, as the Jaylen Brown rumors continue to float around. It still doesn’t seem like they’re going to trade him, but anything can happen.

The best thing the Celtics can probably do is keep building around Brown and Jayson Tatum, as they’ve already shown that they can win at the highest level. Getting them the right pieces will help them get back to what they want to accomplish.
