The Boston Celtics have already made two major trades this offseason and are reportedly looking to continue making wide-sweeping moves. The Celtics have cut nearly $25 million off their books by trading Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta and Jrue Holiday to Portland. However, they are still over the second apron with an estimated tax bill of $88 million for the 2025-26 season. They have paid an estimated $95 million in tax payments to the league over the past two seasons.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, Boston and Memphis had discussions about something last week. Fischer added that there is a belief that the Celtics are looking to unload recently acquired Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang.

“I think the Celtics are still very active in taking trade calls, maybe even making trade calls,” Fischer said. “There was some conversation last week between Memphis and Boston about something. We’re still looking to track down more info on that, but rival NBA teams are still under the impression that Boston is looking for deals involving both Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang.”

Celtics Talking To Teams As They Look Toward 2026-27, Plus, Jayson Tatum & Team Summer League News

Despite the widespread belief that the Eastern Conference is wide open, which is somewhat of a misnomer, the Celtics appear to be heading into the season with their sights set on the 2026-27 season. Granted, Boston had to do something given their spending on Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Porzingis, Holiday, and Sam Hauser. Tatum is unlikely to play this season as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon on May 12. The loss of Porzingis, Tatum, and Holiday not only cuts the Celtics’ talent but also their depth/

Therefore, it makes sense that Boston is looking to reduce their salary cap hit. The Celtics’ ownership is still uncertain as the league has yet to approve the team’s transfer to Bill Chisholm.

“Bill has been pretty clear from the get-go that he wants to make sure that we’re prioritizing basketball assets and the ability to retool this thing at the highest level that we can,” Celtics president Brad Stevens told Masslive. “Again, the most important acquisition that we’re going to be able to make in the next couple of years is getting Tatum out of a boot, right? We’re not beating that one, so that’s going to be the best thing that can happen for us.”

Boston does have options to get under the second apron and perhaps the luxury tax at some point this season. It also makes sense that Simons and Niang are the players the C’s are most willing to move. The Celtics acquired Simons from the Trail Blazers in the trade for Holiday, while Niang was included in the Porzingis trade.

Could The Celtics Trade Anfernee Simons or Georges Niang

Both Simons and Niang are on expiring contracts and are unlikely to be re-signed. Simons has a salary of $27.6 million this season, and Niang will earn $8.2 million. With the Celtics currently over the second apron, they can’t aggregate salaries in a trade. So, if they were looking to get under the apron to provide more flexibility later in the season, they could likely move Niang in a salary dump.

Now, trading Simmons would potentially get the Celtics closer to, if not below, the luxury tax. The Celtics are $20.2 million above the tax line. The Cs would likely have to include the Jaden Springer trade exception ($4.0 million) and possibly add another player, cash, and draft picks. That doesn’t mean they will move on from Simons before opening night.

Boston does have some options if the Celtics are looking to make a trade. Sam Hauser has been considered a trade option as his four-year, $52.9 million extension kicks in this season.  Trading Xavier Tilman Sr. ($2.5 million) is a possibility, but likely as part of a bigger deal. While the Cs have rebuffed offers for Brown and White, it doesn’t mean that teams have quit trying.

Fischer reported about five days ago that Golden State inquired about White. The 31-year-old veteran guard has four years and $125.8 million on his contract.

“The Golden State Warriors ‘definitely’ called the Celtics to trade for Derrick White,” per Fischer.

With Boston having 15 players on standard contracts, the Celtics can easily get under the second apron before the season. Given that the Cs are just $331,000 over the apron, all they have to do is waive JD Davison ($2.2 million). Davison’s contract doesn’t fully guarantee until January 10. Likely, the 2025 G-League MVP will at least make it to training camp with the team.

 Jayson Tatum Progressing In Recovery

While Tatum officially has no timeline for returning to the court, there was good news yesterday regarding his recovery. The 27-year-old revealed on Instagram Sunday that he no longer has a boot on his right foot as he heals from the ruptured Achilles tendon. He also worked out with Chattanooga’s men’s basketball team on Friday.

“He seems to be doing well. Rehabbing’s hard. Anyone who’s been through a long injury and a long recovery, it’s just a challenge,” Celtics president Brad Stevens said on the broadcast of Boston’s July 13 Summer League game. “Mental challenge, physical challenge. But he got the surgery right away, and from that point on, his mindset was, ‘We’re going after this thing and trying to get better.’

“He’s a competitor. He’s gonna compete in everything he does, including rehab. I’m really encouraged. I’ve basically seen him every day in Boston for the last 50 days. Usually, he goes away at the end of the season and then comes back, but he’s just stayed there and been doing his rehab.”

Celtics Summer League Stars

Boston’s summer league squad went 4-1 in Vegas. The Celtics finished third in the standings with 12.5 points, tying Oklahoma City. The Cs ranked second in point differential at +10.6 as they were seventh in points and second in scoring defense.

Charles Bassey

Charles Bassey had an outstanding summer league campaign. The 24-year-old center spent the last three seasons with San Antonio, though he only appeared in 36 contests last season.

Bassey was highly efficient around the rim, fantastic on the glass, and a great rim-protector. Bassey averaged 15.1 points, 11.0 caroms (four offensive), and 2.0 blocks while shooting 70.4% from the field. He compiled two double-doubles and scored in double-figures on three occassions in 21 minutes.

There have been questions about whether Bassey’s summer league performance will earn him a spot on the Celtics roster. Bassey is not eligible for a two-way deal, and the Cs currently have a full roster.

“They won’t be signing Bassey, “Brian Rabb of Masslive said. “Boston’s current tax situation makes it likely they carry 14 players heading into next season, so even cutting Davison outright won’t necessarily open up a spot for Bassey. Moving Tillman with cash (to cover his salary and as a sweetener) is a potential option, but it’s probably something Boston could balk at during this part of the offseason. The team is likely to continue trying to move off bigger salaries (Niang, Simons), so keeping some cash as a potential sweetener in those types of deals is probably a priority over using it to move Tillman at this juncture. Also, packaging Tillman as a throw-in with a bigger trade is probably a more appealing option as well if the team wants to move on from him.”

Rabb believes that Bassey will get a training camp invite.

Baylor Scheierman

Baylor Scheierman is slated to have a bigger role this season. The 24-year-old wing averaged 3.6 points and 2.1 rebounds with splits of 35.5/31.7/75 in 12.4 minutes over 31 appearances as a rookie. He was excellent in the G-League for Maine last season.

Scheierman struggled with shooting the ball this summer. However, the 24-year-old guard showed massive improvement as a playmaker and scored the ball decently well. He also rebounded the ball decently,

Scheierman scored in double-figures twice and doled out at least eight assists on two occassions. He also grabbed five or more rebounds three times and showed some defensive acumen with nine steals.

Scheierman averaged 12.2 points, 5.2 caroms, 6.8 assists, and 2.2 steals. He committed just 1.8 turnovers a game and produced shooting splits of 27.4/20.2/87.5.

Kenneth Lofton Jr

As usual, Kenny Lofton Jr. had a productive summer league. Despite being a summer league star, Lofton has yet to make a significant impact in the NBA, appearing in 45 games for Memphis, Utah, and Philadelphia over the last two seasons. The 22-year-old was named the MVP of the Chinese Basketball League last season.

Lofton is great offensively, but struggles mightily on the defensive end and with turnovers. He reached double-figures three times, averaging 10.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.0 turnovers in four contests. He also compiled shooting splits of 48.3%, 50.0%, and 75.0%.

Jordan Walsh

Jordan Walsh is known more for his defense than his offense. The 21-year-old forward could see a bit of a bump in action this season.

Walsh, who appeared in 51 games for the Celtics this past season, scored at least 13 points in all four summer league games. He averaged 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.2 steals while shooting 46.3/38.9/65.2.
