The Boston Celtics will look a lot different next season as they went through some big changes over the offseason. Outside of some of their core five being traded, the Celtics have also just made a decision on one of their role players. G League MVP JD Davison was recently waived from the team, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
The Celtics had just exercised Davison’s team option that was worth $2.27 million for next season. His salary wasn’t going to be guaranteed until January 2026, but it looks like the Celtics have made the decision on him sooner rather than later.
Davison only appeared in 16 games for the Celtics last season, averaging 2.1 points. The G League was where he thrived the most, where he averaged 25.1 points, 7.6 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game, which led him to win MVP of the league.
In April, the Celtics converted his two-way contract to a standard NBA contract.
With how Davison was able to perform in the G League last season, there is a good chance that a team would look to pick him up if they need depth at the guard position. If that’s not the case, he could find himself on another G League team.
The Celtics have not been shy of making moves this offseason, and they had to do something when looking at their salary cap books. It made even more sense to go along with it when Jayson Tatum went down with an Achilles injury in the second round of the playoffs.
Next season will leave a lot of uncertainty for the Celtics, but they will still have players such as Jaylen Brown and Derrick White to lead the team. Anfernee Simons was acquired in the trade that sent Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, but there’s a chance the Celtics could send him to another team.
The Celtics also added Georges Niang, and still have key role players such as Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser who will play major roles on the team.
