Chet Holmgren Receives Updated Injury Timeline For OKC Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder received a crucial update on Friday regarding the eventual return of their young star center Chet Holmgren.

Holmgren has been out since early November due to a hip injury, and the Thunder have desperately missed him. He has continued to progress in his return-to-play protocol and Oklahoma City has announced that he will be reevaluated in approximately three to five weeks.

Despite Holmgren’s injury, the Thunder have still been one of the best teams in the NBA this season behind another incredible season from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. They currently hold a 34-7 record, which has them sitting at the top of the Western Conference standings.

While the Thunder have still been dominant without Holmgren, his return cannot come soon enough. Oklahoma City recently saw Isaiah Hartenstein go down with a calf strain and he is supposed to be reevaluated in approximately one week. Due to this, the Thunder’s frontcourt has been depleted and they are now relying on Jaylin Williams to man the center position.

Holmgren was off to a strong start to the season prior to his injury. The 22-year-old was averaging 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.6 blocks per game while shooting 50.5% from the field and 37.8% from three.

Oklahoma City has desperately missed Holmgren while he has been out. Hartenstein has been able to fill in for him at a high level, but with Hartenstein now out due to injury, the Thunder’s lack of frontcourt depth could hurt them until both players return.

Of course, once both Holmgren and Hartenstein return from injury, the Thunder have a tough decision to make. Hartenstein is having one of the best seasons of his career, so it will be interesting to see if Oklahoma City decides to start both him and Holmgren or move Hartenstein back to the bench.

Either way, Holmgren’s injury update is a positive one for the Thunder as he should be back well before the playoffs begin, which they desperately need to win a championship this season.
