Chris Boucher was one of the Boston Celtics’ biggest additions this offseason after their disappointing playoff exit.
The Jayson Tatum-less Celtics were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the New York Knicks in six games.
Boston’s front office then decided to completely rebuild the roster for when Tatum returns from his Achilles tendon injury in 2026.
In the meantime, role players like Boucher will need to step up to keep the Celtics competitive without their best player.
And the big man has already settled well in his new home, largely thanks to head coach Joe Mazzulla.
Chris Boucher revealed in his press conference before the 2025-26 NBA season that Joe Mazzulla recently attended his baptism.
This meant a lot to Boucher, who already feels comfortable in his new surroundings because of the support he has received from his coach and teammates.
The former Toronto Raptors man also explained that he gets on so well with Mazzulla because they are almost “the same person.”
“Yeah, I feel like Joe and I are kind of the same person. He’s a really mellow person. Obviously, our character comes out more when you get to know us.
“He showed me it was a family and a brotherhood. It’s not easy to move and start over again, but Joe really helped me with that, and Brad too.
“It’s been a really warm welcome here, and it makes starting training camp a lot easier.”
Boucher is fortunate that he already knew two Celtics players before moving to Boston: Payton Pritchard and Derrick White.
He has now already built relationships with Jaylen Brown and especially Jayson Tatum, who is busy rehabilitating from his injury.
“I played in college with Payton. Payton was one of the first to hit me,” Boucher continued. “Obviously, we won a couple of championships in college. That communication already happened.
“Jayson is always here working on his rehab, so I was always around him, picking his brain on whatever I can do for this team. Jaylen Brown also.
“Derrick White was at Colorado when I was at Oregon, too, so coming here was a lot easier… You sometimes feel like you’re not sure how to approach these guys. Here, it was a lot easier, and it made me feel like part of a family, especially coach Joe.”
