Cleveland Cavaliers Pull Away Late To Beat Milwaukee Bucks

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t just win a basketball game on Tuesday night; they survived a barrage of three-pointers that would make even the “Splash Brothers” blush. In a gritty, hard-fought matchup, the Cavaliers outlasted the short-handed Milwaukee Bucks 123-116.

If you like defense, well, the second quarter of this game might have made you change the channel. But if you like star-studded offensive fireworks and big men dominating the paint, this was prime-time entertainment. With 13 games left in the regular season and a 42-27 record, the Cavaliers are desperately trying to fine-tune their engine before the playoffs. This game was a perfect microcosm of their season: brilliant flashes of talent overshadowed by head-scratching defensive lapses on the perimeter.

Evan Mobley and James Harden Bring the Heat

Let’s talk about the absolute clinic Evan Mobley put on. With Giannis Antetokounmpo sitting on the bench in street clothes, the paint was wide open. Mobley looked around, realized nobody in a green jersey could stop him, and immediately established himself as a certified mismatch punisher. He stuffed the stat sheet with 27 points, a season-high 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks. It was the kind of performance that makes you nod and remember why he is a cornerstone for the Cavaliers.

But Mobley didn’t do it alone. James Harden matched him drop for drop, also pouring in 27 points to tie for the game-high. Harden came out of the locker room looking like he had somewhere to be, dropping 14 points in the opening frame alone. He was cooking early, slicing through the Bucks’ defense and getting to his spots. Add in 19 points from Donovan Mitchell, and the Cavaliers had just enough star power to keep the ship steady.

Surviving the Milwaukee Bucks’ Perimeter Assault

You have to give credit where credit is due. The Bucks are a completely different basketball team without the “Greek Freak.” Milwaukee fell to 11-21 without its franchise superstar, marking the 32nd game he has missed this season. Yet, they refused to roll over. Instead, they decided to just shoot the lights out.

Milwaukee’s bench absolutely obliterated Cleveland’s reserves, outscoring them 57-24. Kevin Porter Jr. orchestrated the chaos with 25 points and 10 assists, looking completely dialed in. The Bucks capitalized on poor closeouts from the Cavaliers, launching a three-point barrage that completely flipped the momentum of the game. Milwaukee hit eight threes in the second quarter alone. Before the Cavaliers could blink or build a comfortable cushion, they found themselves trailing going into halftime.

Milwaukee finished the night shooting a blistering 20-of-45 from beyond the arc. Opposing teams launching three-pointers at a ridiculously high rate is a glaring issue the Cavaliers must fix before the postseason begins.

Clutch Baskets Save the Cavaliers

Basketball is a game of runs, and down the stretch, the Cavaliers finally remembered how to string together a few stops and clutch buckets. After Ousmane Dieng hit a massive three-pointer to cut Cleveland’s lead to 110-106 with just 3:39 left on the clock, the pressure was on.

Enter the supporting cast. Sam Merrill, Keon Ellis, and the newly returned Max Strus hit massive shots when the pressure was at its highest. Merrill was phenomenal, adding 17 points to the scoreboard. In fact, it was Merrill’s clutch three-pointer with 6:55 remaining that gave the Cavaliers a 103-100 lead, sparking a crucial 8-0 run that gave Cleveland the breathing room it desperately needed. Strus, making his season debut just days prior, logged 23 valuable minutes to help weather the storm.

The Cavaliers also lived at the charity stripe, going 27-of-34 from the foul line compared to Milwaukee’s 12-of-17. Sometimes, when your opponent is hitting every three in the gym, the best offense is simply drawing contact and getting free points at the line.

Looking Ahead To the Postseason

The Cavaliers got the job done, taking the season series against the Bucks 2-1. However, the victory highlighted exactly what Cleveland needs to work on. They are still missing crucial pieces. Jarrett Allen sat out his sixth straight game with tendinitis in his right knee, and his interior presence was sorely missed on both ends of the floor. Craig Porter Jr. also remains on the sidelines.

For the Cavaliers, the formula is clear. They have the star power. They have the inside-outside game with Mobley, Harden, and Mitchell. But if they keep letting opposing teams dictate the terms of engagement and launch uncontested threes, they are going to have a very short run in the playoffs.
