Los Angeles Clippers fans held their collective breath on Friday night. During their Las Vegas Summer League matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, rookie guard Keaton Wagler suffered a frightening injury scare. While operating on offense with the basketball in his hands, the No. 5 overall pick took an awkward fall to the hardwood.

The arena briefly went silent as medical personnel immediately rushed over to check on Wagler’s right leg and knee area. For a franchise that recently drafted the dynamic 19-year-old to help usher in a new era, seeing their prized prospect grimacing on the floor was the last thing anyone wanted to witness.

Thankfully, disaster was entirely avoided. Brett Siegel reported on X that Wagler managed to walk back to the locker room tunnel under his own power. After a brief evaluation, the former Illinois Fighting Illini standout checked right back into the game, easing the immense anxiety surrounding the fanbase.

Before Friday’s contest, Wagler had been actively finding his rhythm in the professional ranks. Following a quiet seven-point debut against the Sacramento Kings, he quickly bounced back. He exploded for 23 points and four assists against the Utah Jazz, showcasing the deep shooting range that made him a consensus second-team All-American in college. He then followed that up with a solid 16-point, six-rebound, and four-assist performance against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Clippers desperately need Wagler’s offensive playmaking. With a heavily retooled roster, Los Angeles expects the talented rookie to immediately slot into the backcourt rotation alongside Darius Garland for the upcoming 2026-27 regular season. His ability to facilitate and score from all three levels makes him a foundational piece for the team’s long-term future.

Summer League is always about evaluating talent while surviving without major injuries. The Clippers dodged a massive bullet with Wagler. Now, they can confidently look forward to training camp with their rising star fully healthy and ready to impact the league.
