The LA Clippers are looking to improve their roster further. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype is reporting that the Clippers are looking to sign Tyus Jones in a sign-and-trade with the Washington Wizards. Jones could be traded for Russell Westbrook, PJ Tucker, or Bones Hyland along with some draft picks.
"Tyus Jones, HoopsHype’s top free agent on the board, is continuing to receive interest as a sign-and-trade candidate from several teams, including the Los Angeles Clippers, league sources told HoopsHype."
"The Clippers can dangle some combination of the expiring contracts of PJ Tucker and Russell Westbrook and could offer draft pick compensation or Bones Hyland to the Washington Wizards for helping to facilitate a potential sign-and-trade trade."
Jones had a decent season for the Wizards despite their terrible team performance last year. He averaged 12.0 points, 7.3 assists, and 2.7 rebounds while playing 66 games. It was his best scoring season last year, and he played a big part in helping other players on the team with multiple assists a game.
With the Clippers retooling their roster in the wake of Paul George's departure from the franchise, they could do with some depth at the guard position. James Harden is expected to start as the point guard of the franchise, and Tyus Jones could be a valuable player off the bench.
The Los Angeles Clippers will definitely be concerned about the future of their franchise, especially after Kawhi Leonard's injury problems. Leonard had to withdraw from Team USA this week, after concerns about his knee injury and his underwhelming performance levels in the practice sessions.
The Clippers will be worried that Leonard's injury problems could carry over into the new season. Last year, Leonard played 68 games in the season, the most he had played since the 2016-17 NBA season when he was with the San Antonio Spurs. It appeared that Leonard had overcome his injury problems.
But Leonard's injury problems would rear their ugly head again in the playoffs, as Leonard missed most of the Clippers' first-round series against the Mavericks. With George leaving for the 76ers, Leonard is now the number-one star for the Clippers. And if he is injured regularly, the team will have to rely solely on James Harden.
Former NBA star Paul Pierce recently suggested that Kawhi Leonard should consider retirement, as the constant injury concerns and playoff disappointments since 2019 have garnered him a lot of criticism. Leonard is still a great player, but his injury concerns have overshadowed his talent.
The Clippers invested a lot into landing Kawhi Leonard and mortgaged their future to land Paul George. George left the franchise without any return, and Leonard is barely healthy when they need him to be. Fans of the Clippers may start to worry about the future of their franchise.
