Clippers make questionable decision amid promise to Chris Paul

The Los Angeles Clippers certainly do not have the most sterling of reputations at the moment. They are at the center of the Kawhi Leonard cap circumvention controversy which saw them get handed with a stunning penalty. There was also the debacle between them and Chris Paul, whom they banished last season during their ugly start to the 2025-26 campaign.

Well, it seems like their image will only get worse after they seemingly have already broken their promise to Paul, who said that the Clippers had promised him that his No. 3 jersey will be retired. Instead, the team decided to give his trademark jersey number to Bradley Beal, who re-upped with the franchise this offseason.

This is a bad look from the Clippers brass. Despite the ugly ending between the sides, it still makes sense for the franchise to honor its former franchise player by retiring his jersey.

Paul's body of work includes a six-year stint in Los Angeles and a brief return to the team at the end of his career. Among all the teams he has played for, he was with the Clippers the longest. During his tenure the team became a perennial playoff squad. Even though he failed to lead the team to a championship, he left an indelible mark in their sudden turn into a winning franchise.

On the flip side, Beal has only suited up for six games for the Clippers and has not moved the needle for the franchise, yet he is getting the honor of getting to brandish Paul's No. 3 jersey. That likely won't sit well with Paul and really, any NBA fan in general. 

While the franchise could decide to retire Paul's No. 3 at some point in the future, allowing it to be worn in the interim is a questionable decision at best, especially considering all the other news hovering over the team.

At this point, the Clippers' decision-makers have some soul-searching to do.
