The Clippers need healthy bodies and Blake Wesley needs another opportunity. For the next 10 days, they can help each other.
Los Angeles signed Wesley to a 10-day hardship contract, the team announced Thursday. The deal runs through Nov. 7 and covers four games.
Wesley was with the Clippers during training camp before being waived as they finalized their regular-season roster. Now he returns to a team whose injury list has created room for reinforcements.
Jordan Miller, Yanic Konan Niederhauser, Max Strus, Brandon Ingram and Bradley Beal have yet to play this season. The hardship provision allows the Clippers to add Wesley without opening a spot on their standard 15-man roster.
So this is more than taking another look at somebody from camp. The Clippers have minutes to cover.
Wesley, 23, brings speed, athleticism and on-ball defense. The former first-round pick spent his first three seasons with the Spurs before playing for the Trail Blazers last season.
He averaged 4.8 points and 2.0 assists in 31 appearances for Portland, with his season interrupted by a foot fracture that required surgery.
The Clippers already know what Wesley offers from his preseason stint. He already knows the surroundings, which should make getting back to work a little easier.
Ten days isn’t much time to establish yourself. But with L.A. shorthanded, Wesley has a chance to make those days count.
