Brook Lopez came to the Clippers expecting a backup role behind Ivica Zubac. That plan is gone.
With Zubac dealt at the deadline, Lopez is now positioned to start the rest of the season, as reported by Janis Carr of Orange County Register. The Clippers are counting on the 37-year-old to anchor the middle as they push for a playoff spot.
“It’s just been about staying ready for me,” Lopez said. “Whatever’s required of me, I’m going to go out there and do it.”
Lopez showed what that can look like Friday, posting 16 points and 10 rebounds against the Lakers while the offense flowed through him after Kawhi Leonard exited with ankle stiffness.
“I’m comfortable in a lot of different roles,” Lopez said. “I’ve done it for a long time.”
Leonard’s status for Sunday remains up in the air, but his play has not gone unnoticed. LeBron James offered strong praise afterward, pointing to Leonard’s perseverance through injuries and calling him one of the league’s best players.
“That guy’s awesome,” James said. “I’m not surprised by it.”
Forward John Collins will miss Sunday after suffering a head laceration and neck soreness, according to Law Murray of The Athletic. There is no indication of a concussion.
