The Los Angeles Clippers may not be out of the Bradley Beal sweepstakes after all. In the ever-changing world of NBA trade rumors, things can shift quickly.
During a Bleacher Report livestream from the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Jake Fischer stated that league executives believe the Clippers still have a realistic chance to re-sign Beal. This is despite his decision to decline his player option and enter unrestricted free agency.
The reason is more about money than basketball and also relates to the competitive environment of the NBA.Fischer said Beal is still trying to get back millions he lost in his buyout with the Phoenix Suns last summer. Moreover, the Clippers might be one of the few teams that can help him.
Fischer reported that a league salary cap expert suggested Beal could ultimately return to Los Angeles. If this happens, it would have significant implications for the NBA.Fischer clarified that this discussion is informed speculation, not confirmed reporting.
He explained that modern buyouts often need smart salary cap planning over several years. For example, the recent Khris Middleton sign-and-trade showed how teams use special trade rules. Moreover, they leverage long-term salary flexibility within the NBA landscape.
Using this method, Fischer said a league source thinks the Clippers could create a contract that helps Beal get back much of the money he gave up in his buyout with Phoenix. This would be under the NBA’s regulations.
Fischer pointed out that Beal’s choice in free agency is not just about basketball. The three-time All-Star reportedly forfeited about $13 million in his buyout with the Suns. Afterward, he signed with the Clippers last offseason. All of this was part of navigating NBA contracts.
Fischer estimated that Beal got back about $10 million to $11 million during his first time in Los Angeles, but still has almost $7 million in guaranteed salary left to recover after turning down his $5.62 million player option this summer. The NBA salary cap and team negotiations make these financial decisions complex.
