The Portland Trail Blazers have been making moves this offseason that have made their roster look a lot different
Portland moved on from two of their top players in recent weeks after they agreed to a buyout with center Deandre Ayton and traded away top scorer Anfernee Simons for Jrue Holiday.
The trade that was agreed upon on June 23 had Jrue Holiday getting sent to the Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons, a 2030 second-round pick, and a 2031 second-round pick.
Well, according to multiple league sources, the Celtics won't be getting the two future second-round picks in the deal that became official on July 7.
The Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach wrote, "Concerns were raised because of ‘new findings’ during Jrue Holiday’s medical examinations... Sources said they were not substantial enough for the deal to be nullified, but they did give the Trail Blazers pause."
"So, Boston agreed to move forward with the deal without the 2030 and 2031 second-round picks that Portland originally agreed to send to Boston," Himmelsbach mentioned in the article that was released on July 8.
With this being said, it seems as if the Celtics were determined to get rid of Jrue Holiday and the $34.8 million per year the point guard is owed until 2028.
In the trade, Boston was able bring in Anfernee Simons and the $27.67 million he's owed in an expiring deal.
So the Celtics were able to bring in Simons on a significantly smaller contract that added to the other deals that were made that included Kristaps Porzingis getting traded to the Atlanta Hawks, to avoid the second apron.
Ultimately, the Celtics were stuck in a financial problem, so they were satisfied with missing out on the second-round picks. The trade between the Portland and Boston has turned into a player swap.
