The New Orleans Pelicans ended their NBA Summer League campaign without a win, but the franchise got a glimpse of what they can expect from their lottery pick Jeremiah Fears.

The Oklahoma University player was drafted seventh overall in the 2025 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans after a brilliant NCAA tournament.

Pels’ Summer League coach heaped praise on his speed even before the tip-off of Summer League, and it’s safe to say that Jeremiah Fears has lived up to the hype.

Despite going winless in the five games, Fears delivered some brilliant performances, but coach Corey Brewer thinks one aspect of his game still needs improvement.

Brewer thinks Jeremiah Fears needs to work on decision making

Fears averaged 17.4 PPG, 3.8 RPG and 2.8 APG in five Summer League games.

However, he shot an inefficient 40% from the field and only 18% of his shots from beyond the arc went in.

The Chicago native also had five turnovers per game, which is not good for a point guard in the NBA.

After the Pelicans’ defeat to the Denver Nuggets, coach Brewer was asked which area of the game Fears needs to work on.

He said: “His decision making, it’s rim reads, coming out to pick-and-rolls reads, but it’s anything any young player has to go through it.

“It’s going to be growing pains for him, even during this year, he’s going to have to learn from game to game.”

Brewer, who has also played in the NBA before, stated that Fears would be a completely different player by mid-season in his rookie year.

“His decision making has gotten a lot better. The first two games to the last game, he made a lot better reads and got guys open shots. He’s only going to keep getting better, he’s only 18 years old.

“Everything Jeremiah does he’s learning, it’s new. He’s going to get better and better, by game 40 or 50 next year, he’s going to be a totally different player,” Brewer added.

Brewer lauds Fears’ competitive spirit

Fears achieved a unique feat by being the only lottery pick to play all the games of the NBA Summer League.

While the likes of Cooper Flagg and Ace Bailey were shut down early doors, Fears continued competing for the Pelicans.

He even got into arguments a couple of times against opponents, which shows his will to win.

The 18-year-old has big aspirations as he wants to be known as a top-two point guard.

His numbers in the Summer League were decent, but Fears’ most impressive attribute was being available for his team, something even his coach appreciated.

When asked by reporters what showing up for all five Summer League games said about Fears, Brewer added: “Says he wants to get better, he’s a young guy, he wants to get better, he’s a competitor.

“He wanted to really win and I feel bad we didn’t get a win but you know he fought his __ off.”
