The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking down the barrel of a two-to-zero deficit against the Detroit Pistons, and nearing the end of another disappointing season. The Cavs used to be the core four of Garland, Mitchell, Allen, and Mobley, who have seen this story for a few years now since joining Cleveland.
Now, instead of Garland in that mess, it is James Harden whom they traded for at the trade deadline. A slight upgrade in talent, and a major upgrade in experience, but it looks to end up in the same result. This causes many questions to be asked about the future of this team if they flame out early in the playoffs again.
This Cleveland team could look extremely different by the time the 2026-27 NBA season tips off, and a lot of that has to do with how they finish this year’s playoffs. Obviously, there have been teams that have come back from being down two-to-one in the series, but that is going to be very hard with the way this team is playing right now. The talent is definitely there, the chemistry is not. It just doesn’t look like this Cavaliers team fully trusts each other, and it looks like they are playing for themselves, and not for the team. They have two games at home to try and even this thing out, but it’s not looking good.
Let’s say Cleveland loses again in the second round of the playoffs for the third time in a row, players start feeling some type of way. The front office will have to overlook the whole roster and address what has to change with this team. This all starts with how their superstar, Donovan Mitchell, is feeling at the end of the season.
He does still have a couple of years left in his contract, but after all these years in Cleveland and short runs in the postseason, why would he want to stay? Another question is what happens with Harden? He has a player option for next year, but with how things are currently looking, he could easily opt out and leave.
A rebuild could be a lot closer than many people think. Mitchell could net them a ton of value in a trade, if he requests one, that is. Young players and draft picks would be on their radar if a rebuild is what they are heading for. Harden could leave for nothing, and even if he opts into his player option, they wouldn’t get much value in a trade, which isn’t ideal after they traded Darius Garland for him. Evan Mobley would be the player this team builds around if these events do occur. The Cavaliers’ season isn’t done yet; they have a chance to tie things up with two games in Cleveland.
