Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated recently interviewed Dallas Mavericks long-time owner Mark Cuban to discuss various topics, including his time with the team.
During the interview, Mark Cuban said that he took for granted how great Dirk Nowitzki, the team’s former franchise player, was in his prime. He promised not to make the same mistake with Luka Doncic.
“The nonstop brilliance of Luka. I don’t think I fully appreciated watching Dirk. I’m not going to make that mistake again. And, of course, the Mavs as a team. I love our heart, determination, and character,” Mark Cuban said.
Dirk Nowitzki played for the Dallas Mavericks for 21 years. He led them to their first NBA championship in 2010-11, beating the Miami Heat in six games.
The 14-time NBA All-Star was spectacular during the 2011 Finals , averaging 26.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. Dirk Nowitzki was also named Finals MVP in that series.
Because he had a great professional career, Dirk Nowitzki was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last year.
Fast forward to today, the Dallas Mavericks have another European star on the verge of trying to win another NBA championship, as Luka Doncic is spearheading the charge against the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals.
Doncic put up 30 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals in their Game 1 107-89 loss against the Boston Celtics. However, he didn’t get enough help from his teammates.
His co-star Kyrie Irving only recorded 12 points on 6-of-19 shooting from the field, so he needs to be much better in Game 2 for the Dallas Mavericks to have a chance.
Game 2 between the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics will be at the TD Garden on Sunday.
