Milwaukee Bucks star guard Damian Lillard has been cleared of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and is no longer taking blood-thinning medication, the team announced Thursday.

While there’s no official timetable for his return, Lillard will miss Game 1 of the Bucks’ first-round playoff matchup against the Indiana Pacers on Saturday.

Damian Lillard Could Return for Milwaukee Bucks During NBA Playoffs

Lillard, 34, was diagnosed with DVT in his right calf on March 25, a week after he last played in a game on March 18. Since then, he has undergone treatment and was placed on blood thinners.

According to Bucks general manager Jon Horst, Lillard’s progress has exceeded expectations due to early diagnosis and expert care.

“We’re thrilled for Dame,” Horst said. “Our priority has always been Dame’s health. We’re grateful to our medical team for diagnosing and treating his DVT at an early stage, and for the world-renowned hematology specialists at Mayo Clinic. Every step of Dame’s recovery has been at the direction of world-class medical professionals and their specific and strict protocols that have allowed for Dame’s safe and healthy return to play.”

Milwaukee Bucks Consider Damian Lillard’s Recovery ‘Unprecedented’

Doctors told Bucks officials that the rapid nature of Lillard’s recovery was unprecedented, emphasizing that early intervention and elite medical coordination played a critical role.

“This could have been career-threatening,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said Thursday. “Or it was. The fact there’s a very good chance he’s going to play in the playoffs for us, that’s a godsend.”

Lillard was in the midst of another strong season prior to the setback, averaging 24.9 points and 7.1 assists in 58 games. The nine-time All-Star was one of the league’s most efficient guards before missing the final 14 games of the regular season. Despite his absence, Milwaukee closed the season with an eight-game win streak and went 10-4 during that stretch.

While Lillard continues to increase his on-court basketball activities, the Bucks will look to maintain their momentum as they begin their series against the Pacers. The team has not ruled out Lillard’s potential return later in the series as his ramp-up continues.
