D’Angelo Russell’s time with the Dallas Mavericks had a lot of ups and downs. He started some games, then came off the bench, and was relegated to a cheerleader. It was definitely a rollercoaster ride for the former one-time all-star.
Now, with the Mavs trying to build a winning culture around Cooper Flagg, Russell was traded alongside Anthony Davis, plus a couple of Mavs rotation guys, to the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline. No more AD-Kyrie-Flagg future for Dallas. They officially lost the Luka-AD trade more than a year ago.
But what about Russell? What would the 29-year-old bring to the Wizards? Apparently, he won’t even report to his new team and may seek other opportunities elsewhere either this season or the next.

Russell has a $6 million player option next season, which he will definitely pick up. If he were bought by Washington, he could sign with any team for the rest of the season. The biggest problem is that his on-court value has tanked.
After the stunning Anthony Davis to the Wizards trade, many fans pointed out that wherever AD goes, D’Angelo Russell will follow. While it certainly looked like that was the case again for the two, it may not happen at all in Washington.
So, what’s next for Russell’s NBA career? Unfortunately, this might be it for the former lottery pick. He’s now on his seventh team since being selected second overall by the Lakers in the 2015 NBA Draft.
He’s also facing the sad reality that he may not find a new home again. While there’s no doubt he’s an NBA-caliber guy, D’Angelo Russell’s game peaked years ago. It’s hard to envision him improving at this stage of his career.
