The Memphis Grizzlies are now officially in their new era of the franchise, as they look to build around the young players they have. They also know that bringing some veterans in would be key for them, and they picked one up as part of a six-team trade between them, the Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards.
For the Grizzlies, they received D’Angelo Russell, a 2029 second-rounder, a 2032 second-round swap and a 2033 second-round pick from the Wizards. Russell was the key piece in the trade for the Grizzlies, and they’ll have a veteran guard who should be able to help them next season.
Russell also knows what he can bring to a team, so there’s no surprise that he wrote this under an Instagram post that announced the trade.
“No matter where you send me I’m still dangerous,” Russell wrote.
At this point, Russell may feel like he’s being overlooked, especially looking at how last season went for him. He signed with the Mavericks last offseason in hopes of filling in for Kyrie Irving as he recovered from his ACL injury. Instead, Russell barely saw much time on the floor, and he played in 26 games for the Mavericks.
He was then traded to the Wizards with Anthony Davis, but he never reported to the team.
Russell may now have a chance to change the narrative about himself with the Grizzlies, and he could be someone the young guys lean on. Throughout his career, Russell has shown that he can heat up at any moment, and he can help the Grizzlies win games off that alone next season.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Grizzlies look like, as they have players such as Cameron Boozer, Cedric Coward and Zach Edey to build around for the future.
