Darryn Peterson has already made a name for himself during the NBA Summer League. The No.2 pick by the Utah Jazz is averaging 26.5 points, 7.0 assists, and 3.5 rebounds through four games in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
He scored 28 points against the Atlanta Hawks on July 4. Peterson followed up with a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds against the Memphis Grizzlies on July 6. Then, Peterson scored 24 points against the Washington Wizards on July 9. He scored 23 points against the Los Angeles Clippers on July 12.
Altogether, Peterson shot 52.8% from the field and 43.8% from the 3-point line.
All the while, Peterson kept Kobe Bryant’s spirit alive throughout these games.
His admiration for the “Black Mamba” was on display when he was asked about his approach to defense, Full Court Pass.
When the reporter asked him, “What’s your defensive mentality out there right now?” Peterson said, “Kobe.”

Peterson has cited Bryant as his basketball idol, especially when it comes to being a capable two-way player. Undoubtedly, Bryant became one of the most elite offensive players of his era. However, he was just as elite on the other end of the floor. During his career, Bryant achieved 12 NBA All-Defensive Team selections, tied for the second most in history.
Additionally, he was recognized with nine First Honor selections.
Meanwhile, Peterson has developed into a potent weapon in on-ball defense and closing passing lanes. At 6-foot-10, he has length and a large wingspan, as well as the ability to defend multiple positions.
The Jazz will play the Chicago Bulls on Monday in Las Vegas at 8:00 pm CST/9:00 pm EST.
