In Sunday’s post-practice press conference, De’Andre Hunter emphasized embracing his fresh start with the Cavaliers, bringing confidence, experience, and a winning mentality to his new NBA team alongside his stellar scoring and defending ability on the wing.
The former Atlanta Hawks forward is particularly excited about reuniting with Cavs guard Ty Jerome.
“We had been playing together for years so for it to actually come together … especially at a place like this, it’s amazing,” Hunter said.
Hunter believes he will integrate well with the Cavs’ roster, pointing out familiarity with several teammates and the support of Jerome in his transition.
“I think I’ll fit in great,” he said. “I know a few of these dudes just from playing basketball. I have a friend in Ty so he’ll help me get acclimated.”
A key motivation for Hunter is the expectation of NBA success that comes with joining Cleveland.
“[The most exciting aspect] for me is winning,” he said. “In Atlanta we’ve had down years and good years. But here it’s expected to win, and I’d pride myself on that because I consider myself a winner.”
Hunter acknowledges the challenges of adjusting mid-season but remains confident in his ability to adapt.
“[The acclimation process] will be a little tough especially since it’s mid-season,” he said. “Learning the plays and learning guys’ tendencies might take a while, but the game of basketball is the same no matter where you’re at.”
Joining a winning team, Hunter believes, will elevate his game and mindset along with those of his teammates.
“Mentality. When you come into a game expecting to win … it brings the best out of you,” Hunter. “That’s the thing that helps me the most and something I can bring to the team as well.”
