DeMarcus Cousins Breaks Silence After Getting Suspended for Brawl

The consequences caught up with former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins. That fight with fans during a game in Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN), a Puerto Rico basketball league, cost Cousins a $4,250 fine; it also cost him his job, as he was suspended and had his contract terminated by his team, the Mets de Guaynabo.

On Thursday, Cousins addressed his actions and issued an apology via his Instagram account.

The post read, "I want to apologize to the fans of Puerto Rico for my actions. I have so much love and respect for the island. "

This was Cousins' second stint with the Mets. He first joined the team in 2023. The 6-foot-10, 270-pounder has played in several international leagues in recent years, including the BSN, the Taiwan Professional Basketball League and The League (Mongolia).

In 10 games this season, the 34-year-old was averaging 18.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.4 steals.

Earlier this week, Cousins made an obscene gesture in front of fans who were talking to him from the sidelines. He and the fans appeared to exchange heated words, and Cousins grabbed onto the arm of a fan who was seated courtside on Monday.

The action gave the former NBA All-Star his second technical foul, ejecting him from the game. As he was leaving the court, Cousins was argumentative with fans, who threw drinks at him as he exited.

Cousins last played in the NBA in 2022 as part of the Denver Nuggets.

A four-time NBA All-Star and two-time member of the All-NBA Second Team, controversy has followed Cousins throughout his basketball career. In December 2012, he was suspended indefinitely by the Sacramento Kings because of "unprofessional behavior and conduct detrimental to the team."
