DeMarcus Cousins made his first public comments Thursday about the incident in Puerto Rico that got him suspended for the rest of the season.

Cousins got into an altercation with a fan recently while playing for the Guaynabo Mets in Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). The incident escalated to the point that Cousins was pelted with drinks after grabbing his crotch and flipping off a fan.

On his Instagram story Thursday, Cousins issued an apology for his behavior.

“I want to apologize to the fans of Puerto Rico for my actions. I have so much love and respect for the island,” Cousins wrote.

Cousins was suspended for the remainder of the season for the incident. A number of Bayamon Cowboys fans were also disciplined for their involvement in the incident.

Cousins is still just 34, but has not appeared in an NBA game since 2022. This was his second season playing in Puerto Rico, but after this incident, it is unclear if he will be welcomed back to this league either.
