DeMarcus Cousins has spent 2025 playing in the Puerto Rican league. It looks like his temper has not calmed down with age. Recently, he almost committed his own “Malice in the Palace.” He nearly fought fans after they threw drinks at him because they flipped them off. That is not the whole story though.
I am sure many are surprised that the ex-Kentucky Wildcat is still playing pro ball. It has been three years since DeMarcus Cousins has played in the NBA. He has been playing overseas ever since bouncing between China, Puerto Rico, and Mongolia. He first played in Puerto Rico in 2023 on the Mets de Guaynabo in the nation’s top basketball league. They have a stadium capacity of 5,000. Far from the crowds he was playing in front of with the Kings, huh?
In 2023, he averaged 20.4 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game in 25 minutes per game. He shot 44% from the three-point line and 69% on free throws. He got injured in the playoffs. After going to China and then Mongolia in 2024, he returned to Puerto Rico and his old team.
Now getting into the recent incident that happened. In the fourth quarter of Mets de Guaynabo’s most recent game, DeMarcus Cousins started to get into it with a fan who was making a crying gesture at him. Cousins then grabbed his private area and flipped him off with the fan flipping him off back. After that, Cousins had to be held back as Cousins began yelling at him and maybe even other fans based on how it looked.
DeMarcus Cousins was ejected after that. He was heading back to the locker room having to cut through a path of fans. He began trash-talking those who were trash-talking him. He then began to flip them all off so they began to throw popcorn and drinks at him. Cousins tried to go after all the fans throwing food and beverage at him but he was held back by the multiple security guards and police officers that escorted him into the tunnel.
NBA fans know DeMarcus Cousins has never been known for having the coolest head having 14 ejections in his NBA career. He was top 10 in both personal fouls and technical fouls every year from his rookie season until 2017. One incident was when he threatened to fight former Kings teammate, Nik Stauskas on a plane. According to Philadelphia 76ers’ insider Michael K-B, the Kings eventually traded Stauskas to the Sixers to satisfy Cousins.
There also was a time when he was fined $50,000 after he scored 55 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. He was ejected for spitting out his mouthguard, sprinted to the locker room, mysteriously got un-ejected, made a game-winning defensive play, and then ripped into both the officials and his opponent during a must-see postgame interview in the most “Boogie Cousins” moment of all time.
Not that he was right here, throwing hands because of a few gestures will always be stupid. But I know that rush of sudden anger rushing in all at once and how much mental toughness it takes to control that. It is not an excuse for anything but I hope he continues getting the help he needs to battle this demon and become a better and stronger person. Thanks a bunch for reading!
