Austin Reaves scored 51 points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 127-120 win against the Sacramento Kings.

The shooting guard is currently the Lakers’ first option because LeBron James and Luka Doncic are injured.

Former Laker Dennis Schroder often had the responsibility of guarding Reaves during the game.

After struggling to slow him down, Schroder reacted to Reaves’ incredible performance at the Golden 1 Center.

Dennis Schroder reacts to Austin Reaves 51-point game vs Kings

Schroder admitted that he and the Kings should have done more to stop Reaves from scoring a career-high 51 points.

However, the 27-year-old is a borderline All-Star caliber player with the “green light” to take as many shots as he wants.

“Luka and Bron are out. He’s the third guy, and he’s got the ultimate green light,” Schroder said about his former teammate.

“We should’ve done a better job of containing him, maybe blitzing him, but he had a hell of a game. Sometimes, you’ve just got to say, ‘He had a great game,’ and move on to the next one.”

Despite praising Reaves for inspiring the Lakers’ victory, Schroder was also frustrated with the referees for letting the Kings down.

The Lakers shot 28 more free throws than the Kings on Sunday, which made it “tough” for the home team to compete.

“It’s tough when they shoot 46 free throws for the game,” Schroder added. “We want to play fast; we want to push the pace, but if they’re getting free throws, they’ve got a set defense. So, it was pretty tough today.”

Dennis Schroder says Sacramento Kings were not complacent vs LA Lakers

Schroder was also asked whether the Kings were complacent against the Lakers, who were missing James and Doncic.

He insisted that the Kings spoke about not overlooking their opposition and that it was not a factor in their defeat.

“No. We emphasized that before the game,” he responded. “We said we still want to come out and make sure we stay together, doing everything as a team.

“[We wanted to] be more aggressive, but like I said, everybody stepped up for them. They had a hell of a game plan; everybody played well, and sometimes it’s like that.”
