Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves Could Compete for 6-Time All-Star in Surprising NBA Free Agency Scenario
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Lowry is in the twilight of his NBA career. But he probably feels he still has some gas left in the tank to contribute to a team, perhaps a contender. How about the Denver Nuggets or the Minnesota Timberwolves?

In an article by Dan Favale of Bleacher Report, he floated the idea of Lowry signing with either the Nuggets or the Timberwolves.

To what end Denver and Minnesota can guarantee his role is debatable. Both could use upgrades at the backup point guard spot. The Nuggets have Reggie Jackson (player option) and the Timberwolves landed Monte Morris at the deadline, but Lowry is the steadier defender and off-ball mover and can still run things and fire off pull-up jumpers in a pinch.

Forced to choose one or the other, Minnesota is the better fit. The Nuggets won’t want to burn roster spots on both Lowry and Jackson—though they could look to use the latter’s salary in a trade that nets a second-line big—and the Wolves will have more minutes available if they don’t retain Morris and don’t want to run Mike Conley into the ground during his age-37 season.

Should the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves be Interested in Kyle Lowry?

One thing Lowry has experience — winning experience. He won an NBA title as a core player with the Toronto Raptors back in 2019 and he was an All-Star as recently as 2020. Having turned just 38 years old last March, it’s clear that Lowry’s time in the NBA will not be for long, but he is someone who could provide depth and stability at the point guard position.

As mentioned by Favale, the Timberwolves have both Mike Conley Jr. and Monte Morris on expiring contracts. Retaining either of those players could be much more expensive than signing Lowry.

As for the Denver Nuggets, they have a player option worth $5.25 million for Reggie Jackson in the 2024-25 NBA season. If Jackson picks that up, he could still be a tradeable asset before the next trade deadline, so adding another guard, albeit an older one like Lowry.
