The Memphis Grizzlies were 3-2 entering their Friday night Emirates NBA Cup matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.. It turned into a rough night for the franchise as the Grizzlies suffered a 117-112 home loss. Memphis star Ja Morant had a disappointing eight-point outing before sharing his displeasure in postgame media comments.
Morant seemed to place the blame for his worst showing of the season on the Grizzlies' coaching staff, with his dismissive comments making the rounds on social media. This led to the Grizzlies announcing a one-game suspension for the 26-year-old point guard, forcing him to miss the team's Sunday night clash against the Toronto Raptors.
Ahead of this matchup, ESPN's Shams Charania shed light on interesting details that led to the Grizzlies suspending Morant, reportedly including a heated interaction with head coach Tuomas Iisalo.
"There's been tension ... around Ja Morant and his feelings towards first-year head coach Tuomas Iisalo's rotation patterns and plays ," Charania said. "But it really culminated after and during their loss to the Lakers in the postgame locker room.
"Morant and Iisalo had an exchange, where Iisalo called out Morant's leadership and effort in front of the whole team. As teammates and staffers all looked on, Morant responded in what the team deemed an 'inappropriate and dismissive way,' according to sources. That's when the Grizzlies, their team officials, huddled up and levied a one-game suspension on Ja Morant that he'll serve on Sunday in Toronto."

Iisalo is in his first full season as head coach for the Grizzlies, assuming the role as an interim coach after the franchise fired Taylor Jenkins in March. He was named as the full-time replacement in May, just 10 months after he joined Jenkins' coaching staff as his lead assistant in July 2024.
Morant is averaging 20.8 points, 6.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds in six games this season. His numbers are lower than his career averages (22.6 points, 7.4 assists, 4.7 rebounds per game), but Morant is having a positive impact on the court. He hit a game-winning bucket against the New Orleans Pelicans last week, but that moment is already fading in the wake of his actions after the loss to the Lakers.

Hopefully, Morant and coach Iisalo can reconcile any differences after Morant's one-game suspension. The team has shown promise to start the season with a 3-3 record, with playoff contention on the table if Morant and co-star Jaren Jackson Jr. perform at a high level. However, any locker room discord could lead to either personnel or coaching changes before we even reach midseason.
