Detroit Pistons Rumors: Troy Weaver’s Days May be Numbered After Team Suffers Shocking Drop to the No. 5 Pick of the 2024 Draft

The Detroit Pistons are undergoing an overhaul of the front office this summer, as they announced that they are looking to bring in a new president of basketball operations.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, amid the franchise’s search for a new boss, the candidate who gets the job will have the final say in making major basketball decisions, which may include retaining or firing general manager Troy Weaver.

“Potential candidates for the position have been informed they will have the agency to dismiss Weaver from his post, league sources told Yahoo Sports,” Fischer wrote.

Fischer also reported that the Detroit Pistons contacted Jon Horst and Neil Olshey to interview for the position, but the Milwaukee Bucks blocked Horst and Olshey declined the invitation.

Despite finishing the 2023-24 season with a franchise-worst 14-68 record, the Detroit Pistons couldn’t nab at least a top-three pick for this summer’s NBA Draft. They were rewarded with the highest lottery odds but were given the No. 5 pick on Sunday.

The top overall pick was rewarded to the Atlanta Hawks, who only had a three percent chance coming into the lottery. The Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs will pick second, third, and fourth.

Since taking Cade Cunningham with the No. 1 overall pick in 2021, the Detroit Pistons have bad back-to-back No. 5 overall picks in 2022 and 2023, where they selected Jaden Ivey and Ausar Thompson, respectively.

With the No. 5 pick this summer, several talented bigs and wings will likely be available for the Detroit Pistons to pick, including Zaccharie Risacher and Dalton Knecht.
