Devin Booker is one of the best players to ever suit up for the Phoenix Suns. He has four All-Star nods and will continue to add to his resume as his career continues, and he played a massive role in taking them to their first Finals appearance in nearly three decades in 2021.
However, he was not always known as a winner. In his first four seasons, despite some stellar individual games, the Suns never won 25 games. As Pheonix prepares for a post-Kevin Durant era with very limited draft capital and assets, Booker can feel the walls closing in.
On Tuesday, the Suns all but eliminated themselves from postseason contention after suffering a 133-95 blowout loss to the Golden State Warriors.
Booker led the Suns with 21 points, but it was far too meager of an effort.
"I think the most frustrating part is being that close a few years ago and now back to where we are," he said after the loss to the Warriors.
For fans, that's a damning statement issued by the face of their franchise. Since Booker's rookie season, which was only ten years ago, almost everyone on the roster from that team has since ended their career. Only Alex Len, PJ Tucker, and Markieff Morris are still playing, although they are barely hanging on.
The vast majority of Booker's first teammates were out of the league before the 2020s.
Booker knows that the Suns are dangling on the edge of returning to that era, and only a massive haul for Kevin Durant, which seems unlikely, can save Booker from spending his prime the same way he spent his early career.
