Devin Booker Uses Drake’s ‘Stories About My Brother’ to Pay Tribute to Kevin Durant

When Kevin Durant selected the Phoenix Suns as his next destination, his logic was to play alongside Devin Booker and the rest of the team in his quest to win a title or two. The plan was sound, as the team had just reached the NBA Finals a couple of seasons before his arrival.

The plan was to add scoring presence on a team that could not get over the hump and lost in the West Semis the year before. That move alone was touted to be enough for the Suns to become legitimate threats to win their 1st-ever NBA title.

However, the team’s top brass featuring newly installed owner, Mat Ishbia, wanted to win the title immediately, and believed the team would be better off with a Big 3. That led to a massive trade to bring in Bradley Beal.

That combination, though, did not work out as they first were embarrassingly swept out of the 1st round by the Minnesota Timberwolves, and this season, could not even reach a play-in spot. The franchise understood a change was needed.

The 1st change, and a massive one, was when they traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. After the mammoth NBA-record 7-team trade was made official, Devin Booker was among the first to pay tribute to his former teammate.

He posted a story on his Instagram page depicting his time playing alongside the 15-time All-Star. The clip was captionless, but the song used, Drake‘s ‘Stories About My Brother’, was enough of a statement to his ‘brother’.

Kevin Durant and Devin Booker time was thwarted by ownership mistakes

When the new owner, Mat Ishbia, took over in February 2023, his instructions to the front office were clear. Build a team that can win the title right away. That forced them to give up a lot of assets to bring in Kevin Durant.

Giving up two role players and 4 unprotected 1st round picks was seen as a massive price for a 34-year-old superstar. However, the team still had the likes of Chris Paul, Deandre Ayton and some decent role players.

Despite the short time to get used to each other, the Suns made it to the Conference semis. After the loss, the ownership first decided to let go of head coach Monty Williams, and then proceeded to make the trade that broke the team’s back.

Instead of keeping a team still brimming with talent, they traded for Bradley Beal. In exchange, they again had to give up a lot of assets. Beal’s injuries would become a problem, and his play was always suspect alongside Durant and Booker.

Now the team are trying to undo everything, but might not get back what they had given up. The Suns became a mess, and many believe Mat Ishbia’s intentions of trying to win a title early in to his ownership have set the franchise back by at least a few seasons.

Suns working with Bradley Beal on potential buyout

With Kevin Durant gone, the Phoenix Suns are trying to fix their other mistake. As per veteran journalist Marc Stein, the team are looking to work out a potential buyout with Bradley Beal after trying to coax him into a trade.

Last season, he was part of a few trade talks, but the 32-year-old decided to stay put in Arizona and declined to waive his no-trade clause. He understood the team wants to move on from him after he was benched midway through the season.

Even though the coach who benched him is not around anymore, the indications were loud and clear enough. If Beal agrees to the buyout, he would still earn a lot of money over the years. However, he could get the opportunity of a lifetime to choose where he wants to go.
