There has been plenty of speculation regarding Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James this week due to the massive betting scandal in the NBA.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested Thursday for his alleged role in an illegal poker scheme. Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was also arrested, but he's being accused of partaking in an illegal sports betting scheme.
“Sportsbooks in multiple states flagged suspicious betting interest on Rozier’s statistics ahead of a Charlotte Hornets-New Orleans Pelicans game on March 23, 2023,” ESPN insider Shams Charania wrote. “An unexpected surge of bets — including 30 wagers in 46 minutes from a professional bettor totaling $13,759 — came in on the under on Rozier’s points, rebounds and assists, causing sportsbooks to halt betting on the veteran guard. Rozier, then with the Hornets, played just 10 minutes before leaving the game, citing a foot injury.”
The third notable name who was arrested Thursday happens to be former Cleveland Cavaliers guard and assistant coach Damon Jones. Per the indictment, he's being accused of selling inside information to sports bettors.
ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that Jones had a close relationship with James. Naturally that sparked rumors about the four-time NBA champion.
On Friday afternoon, a parody account on X by the name of "The Spectator Inbox" posted a tweet that sent the NBA community into a frenzy.
"JUST IN: FBI agents reportedly paid a visit to LeBron James earlier today. Details remain unclear," the post from The Spectator Inbox read.
This post received over 1.1 million views and 14,000 likes in just five hours. Some fans thought it was a legitimate tweet from The Spectator Index, which is a news account that has over three million followers.
As of this Friday, not a single reliable reporter has said James is under investigation.
For what it's worth though, FBI director Kash Patel said more arrests could be on the way since this gambling scandal spans across 11 states.
