It was reported on Thursday morning that the Los Angeles Lakers are "preparing a massive, long-term contract offer" for Connecticut head coach Dan Hurley to jump ship to the NBA in the same role.
With the surprising news, fans are now looking back at a recent social media comment made by Lakers superstar LeBron James regarding Hurley.
He’s so DAMN GOOD!!! Along with his staff. Super creative with their O! Love it
— LeBron James (@KingJames) April 19, 2024
James' praise came just 11 days after Hurley led the Huskies to their second straight national title by defeating Purdue, 75-60.
The comments were also in response to a video of JJ Redick interviewing Hurley on the former's podcast, "The Old Man & The Three." Redick, ironically, has been rumored to be the frontrunner for the Lakers' gig for weeks.
Spotrac laid out some financial ramifications of Hurley potentially leaving UConn for Los Angeles.
Couple of Danny Hurley notes...
— Spotrac (@spotrac) June 6, 2024
▪️Signed a 6 year, $32.1M extension with UConn last summer...
▪️Must pay a $1.875M fee to leave for an NBA job...
▪️Was reportedly offered $10M-$12M per year from Kentucky...
▪️Top NBA head coaches reportedly earn between $14M-$17M per year...
Shortly after the Huskies beat the Boilermakers for the championship on April 8, Hurley was asked about the then-vacancy at the University of Kentucky. The 51-year-old emphatically shut down talk of his potential interest in the role, saying he was committed to Connecticut.
Having the chance to coach in the NBA and lead a storied franchise like the Lakers would be a different opportunity, though.
Los Angeles is tied with the Boston Celtics for the most NBA titles with 17, having most recently won the crown in the "Bubble" in 2020.
If Hurley were to join the Lakers, he'd have the chance to coach an all-time great in James, another superstar in Anthony Davis, and possibly LeBron's son, Bronny. There's a decent chance that the elder James would recruit some other big names to Los Angeles for however much longer he stays with the franchise.
Hurley's on top of the college basketball world right now, and few head-coaching gigs would top where he's at right now. Leading the Lakers may be one of them.
