The Phoenix Suns got off to a perfect start to pre-season with a 103-81 win against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers were without LeBron James and Luka Doncic, but the Phoenix Suns still impressed with a commanding victory. They were led by Devin Booker’s 24 points in 25 minutes.

Dillon Brooks made his Suns debut after being traded from the Houston Rockets in the Kevin Durant deal. He chipped in with 10 points and a +/- of 22 in a solid first outing.

The Suns’ offseason saw them turn around their roster by trading Kevin Durant and buying out Bradley Beal, and Brooks gave his thoughts on the new unit’s first game together afterwards.

Dillon Brooks says Devin Booker will find ways to get him shots

Booker, who received a two-year, $145 million extension this summer with the Suns, had his first taste of running the show as a solo act in pre-season. Phoenix’s lone star pulled the strings from the point impressively, dishing out 7 assists.

Brooks went 3-4 from three, thanks to Booker’s playmaking, and credited his teammate for getting him open shots.

He said to reporters, “He watches film so he’s gonna find out ways to score and ways to get guys involved. He’s our point guard so he watches a lot of film, and I think he found me on all my threes. I appreciate it, and I’m gonna knock them down.”

The Suns’ offense looked fluid in the absence of Durant and Beal, and Brooks said it was a perfect start to preseason on that side of the ball.

He continued, “I feel like a lot translated. A lot of our offensive schemes we did perfectly, might have missed one. We got to the middle of the floor, and when they collapsed down on us we got some open shots.

“On defense, maybe we have to do less fouling, but I’d rather have that than them driving and doing whatever they want. But overall I feel like it was a good game, and it only ramps up from here.”

Dillion Brooks says it’s ‘hard to find solutions’ to Phoenix Suns’ defensive weakness

Brooks has established himself as a defensive specialist in the league, and entering his ninth NBA season, he’s a defensive leader on this team.

He gave this thoughts on the Suns’ defensive efforts, and identified a key area for improvement.

Brooks said, “Ball pressure was good. We just have to do it with some intelligence. Ball pressure, ball pressure then navigate the screens. We had good rim defense, we got a lot of steals, pushed our break, and maybe we have to get to our rotations a little better.

“It’s hard to find solutions when you’re just running around, but we’ll get better.”

That’s something that Brooks thinks can’t be improved in game, so it’s going to be an intense few weeks at practice on the defensive end for Phoenix to address those issues ahead of the season.
