Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is currently on top of the world. With the Oklahoma City Thunder on course to win another championship, Gilgeous-Alexander won back-to-back MVP awards . However, ESPN’s Shams Charania leaked the news long before the official announcement. And Dirk Nowitzki and Blake Griffin couldn’t help but roast Charania.

Most big NBA updates are usually tweeted by Charania first. The MVP announcement was supposed to be made on NBA on Prime later that evening. But the ESPN insider posted his tweet at around 9:50 am, which landed him in hot water. And that was not all. ESPN also went on to publish a news article at 10:15am ET.

Such a turn of events sparked quite a few exchanges in the Amazon Prime studio. The host, Taylor Rooks, stated that people had not spoiled the MVP announcements beforehand in previous years. To this, Nowitzki replied, “He was a baby then,” referring to Charania. Next up, Griffin chimed in, saying, “It’s Sunday, Shams. Go to brunch, nerd.”

Meanwhile, after Charania announced Gilgeous-Alexander’s news, several journalists expressed their displeasure.

Journalists Did Not Like Shams Charania Leaking The NBA MVP News Before The Official Announcement

Charania has done it before. The ESPN insider was the first one to break Luka Doncic’s blockbuster news. As the trend becomes the norm, more and more journalists are becoming agitated. Immediately after the MVP tweet, Clutchpoints NBA insider Tomer Azarly reposted the tweet with a take of his own.

Azarly wrote, “League waited 5 weeks after the regular season just to have it leaked like this. What a waste.”

Additionally, The Thunder Wire’s Clemente Almanza also vented out frustration, saying, “Spoiling MVP again is so lame. Doesn’t do it for any other award or accolade. Just a clout-hungry move to make. Everybody knew he was going to win it. Let SGA and Thunder fans have their moment in real time instead of creating this awkward 10-hour waiting period.”

Thus, with things looking complicated, fans will wait to see how Charania responds.
