Life as a member of the Golden State Warriors has not been smooth sailing so far for Dennis Schroder. The recently acquired guard had another lackluster performance in Friday's tough 102-92 loss against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Schroder started the game for the Warriors, but his impact on the contest was barely felt on the offensive end. The veteran guard only amassed seven points, shooting 3-11 from the field, and five assists.
Schroder was seen as a hot trade commodity when he was a member of the Brooklyn Nets this season. His averages of 18.4 points and 6.6 assists per game looked like an attractive addition for any team.
Schroder has yet to have that kind of positive impact for the Warriors. Through five games, he is averaging 8.2 points, on an abysmal 28.0 percent from the field, and 4.2 assists per game.
Adjusting to a new role, and a new team, is never easy. As such, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr did not sound too concerned with Schroder's play at the post-game press conference last night.
"It's always difficult to go to a new team in the middle of the season and not know your teammates very well," Kerr told reporters. "It takes some time. He's still basically in training camp with our team. He's been here less than two weeks. He played four or five games, so it's just going to take some time. What you do is you trust who the player has been for 10 or 12 years, you trust that he'll get comfortable, and settle in, because it's a tiny sample size we're talking about."
Kerr also explained that the Warriors had not done Schroder a lot of favors early on: "He also came to us at a time where we've been ice cold, so he needs shooting around him. He's a pick-and-roll player. We were seven for 38 tonight from three. ...He's going to be fine, but we've got to gain some confidence shooting the ball and find multiple guys in one game who get it going."
The salary of De'Anthony Melton was seen as an important trade piece for the Warriors before the acquisition of Schroder. Some thought it was a perfect add-on if the team was going to pursue a big star. Instead, it was used to trade for the former Nets guard.
There is still plenty of time for Schroder to figure things out in Golden State. His new head coach certainly sounds confident in that happening eventually. However, it should not be lost on anyone that the Warriors will have an opportunity to move Schroder again before the NBA Trade Deadline on Feb. 6, if the fit is not working out.
