Victor Wembanyama has had an amazing start to his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs. Making it all the way to the NBA Finals as the first option is an achievement in itself, but doing all of that in your third season in the league is next-level stuff. For the trajectory that many people have him on, and that is being the next face of the league and maybe in the GOAT debate with LeBron James and Michael Jordan, he might be in some trouble. For a player of his caliber, this Finals loss might have tarnished the way people are going to view and rank him in all-time talks.
If Wembanyama was able to pull this off, he would’ve done something that not even Jordan and James were able to accomplish. Jordan won his first ring at 28 years old, while James did it at 27. Wembanyama would’ve been just 22 years old, leading his team to his first-ever championship. This would have put him far ahead of schedule in his chase for the GOAT case.
This matters for him because it’s something that not many players have been able to accomplish, especially when you consider that the Spurs were heavy favorites to win the Finals once they made it. If you asked anyone before the Conference Finals ended, they would’ve told you that whoever was coming out of the West was going to be the Champion, but that was simply not the case. The fact that he lost to a team that was considered an underdog without question could hurt his rankings down the road.
Another thing to mention is that we’re in the parity era of the NBA, as we haven’t seen repeat Champs since the Kevin Durant Warriors in 2017 and 2018, which means it’s a lot harder to win a title right now. What if Wembanyama doesn’t make it back to the Finals? Blowing this one chance at a ring could haunt him for the rest of his career.
The good news for Wembanyama is that he’s still young and has a great guard pairing of Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, who are only 21 and 20 years old. With the right focus, development, and motivation of the loss, getting back to the Finals should be more attainable for this group than other teams. Wembanyama is on pace to be one of the best players that this league has ever seen, but without the hardware to show for it, it’ll be hard to put him on that pedestal just yet.
