Donald Trump says he expects to attend one New York Knicks game during the 2026 NBA Finals after the franchise ended its 27-year wait.
The Knicks’ Finals run has become a national talking point. New York has not reached this stage since 1999, and the buzz has now reached the White House.
Trump’s comments also highlighted his connection to James Dolan and the pull of Madison Square Garden.
In a Dunk Central clip, Trump said he is likely to attend one of New York’s Finals games.
“I think I’ll be going to one of the games. Jim Dolan’s [a] great guy, [he], as you know owns … Madison Square Garden. He’s having a good year. Boy, what a team. They won all their games,” Trump said.
The Knicks reached the Finals by sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, completing a dominant playoff surge that brought the franchise back to June basketball.
Reports have pointed to Madison Square Garden’s Finals games as the likely target if Trump follows through, with Game 3 and Game 4 expected in New York.
A sitting president attending an NBA Finals game would also be highly unusual, adding presidential security and national political attention to an already massive New York sports event.
Trump also said he had been invited by Dolan and others before making clear why the Knicks’ run stood out to him.
“I was invited by numerous people and Jim, and I think I’ll be going. Great to see. The Knicks have really, they’ve really suffered for years. They’re doing right now very well,” Trump added.
That line lands because the Knicks’ drought was not abstract. Their last Finals appearance came in 1999, before the current starting five were old enough to remember it.
New York has spent decades cycling through false starts, rebuilds and playoff disappointments, which is why this run feels so big for the city.
Trump has also publicly praised Dolan before, and their relationship gives the possible appearance of a personal angle beyond normal presidential sports attendance.
For the Knicks, the bigger story remains the same. They have finally turned years of suffering into a Finals stage, and Trump now says he expects to be there to see part of it.
